interdum solitaria.
In this tribe, exccptia the two first genera, which arc anomalous, the petals are
quite flat, and general^ eathcry or membranous in texture. In this respect they
differ essentially from dnonecs and Xylopiea, and approach Uoariea, from which
they are only distinguished by the valvate (not imbricate) aestivation of the petals.
In some of the genera the petals are only valvate in the very young bud, separating
from one another at on early period. The two first genera are in many respects in-
termediate between %ylopie& and Guatterieay but as their petals arc uniform in
shape, and the inner ones, though concave at the base, are not triquetrous above, we
refer them to the present tribe.
